What Happens if You Take Too Many Vitamins and Minerals

A majority of the food we consume is high in vitamins and minerals content. Additionally, supplements are good for your health.

However, if you don’t pay attention to the label, and if you take more supplements than recommended, it is possible to exceed your daily recommended dose. This can cause problems.

Vitamin C

Fact: L-ascorbic, the most common form of vitamin C in healthy foods, is soluble in water. Vitamin C is not made by the body, so it is necessary to obtain it through diet or supplements.

Vitamin C can’t be stored in the body, unlike fat-soluble vitamins. Over-consumption can lead to problems.

What happens in your body: Too much vitamin A can cause stomach upset which can lead to problems such as diarrhea and nausea. In rare cases, skin rashes could occur.

Healthy value: Adults should take between 65mg-90mg of vitamin C each day. The tolerance limit for vitamin C is 2000mg. Anything higher can cause side effects.

Iron

Fact: Iron is an important mineral, which plays a key role in the creation of red blood cells. Without iron, red blood cells cannot be produced. They carry oxygen to our bodies. Red meats contain haem iron and are absorbed quickly by the body. Non-haem is found in plants.

What happens in your body: The excess iron is stored as an organ such as the liver, heart, and pancreas. Iron, unlike vitamins and other nutrients, cannot be excreted in the urine, feces, or body tissues. Large amounts can cause nausea, diarrhea, liver damage, and dehydration as well as coma in severe instances.

Healthy value: 8mg is the daily recommended dose for men aged 19 to 50, and 18mg in women the same age. Adults should not consume more than 45 mg per day.

Vitamin A

Fact: Vitamin A can be soluble in fat and is essential for good health, skin health, and beauty. Your body stores most of the vitamin-A in your body in the liver and other tissues. There are two types, pre-made vitamin, and provitamin. These can be found mostly in meat and seafood.

What happens when you aren’t there?

Too much premade vitamin A (due to ingredients or medications), can cause dizziness nausea headaches, and even death. Birth defects may be caused by premature vitamin A deficiencies in pregnant women.

Skin can become orange when it has too much provitamin-A, which is a form of betacarotene. Dry lips are often an indication of vitamin A overdose. This is followed by dryness in the mucous skin and eyes.

Fact:
